Computer Security & Viruses/Blinking cursor on black screen

Question
All I am getting when I turn on our family PC is a blinking cursor on a black screen (right after the dos boot prompts appear then disappear.) Right before this problem occurred we lost connectivity to the internet through our wireless card.  I don't know if the two have anything to do with each other.  The PC hung up like this for the first time yesterday and I powered off with the power button and powered back on and it worked.  Today alas, the luck has run out.  I tried powering off the PC and all peripherals on the power strip and it didn't work.  The PC ran fine for one year since we got it, before this happened.

Here are our PC specs:
EMachines T6412 Desktop PC
AMD Athlon Processor 2.20 GHz
512 MB DDR SDRAM
D-Link wireless card
Windows XP Home Edition
Norton AV
Spy Sweeper
Netgear wireless home network

Thank you!

Answer
Im so sorry it took so long to get back to you.
Have you tried booting in safe mode? Will it let you?
I dont think it has anything to do with your Internet connection unless you picked up a Virus or such.
What AntiVirus are you using?
Were you dnloading when this happened, like MS Updates or something?
