About Lorry
Expertise
I can answer most questions regarding viruses/Trojans and help to remove them.

Experience
This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.

Computer Security & Viruses - Removing Adware/Spyware

Expert: Lorry - 8/2/2004

Question
Hi Lorry.  I hope this question falls within your area of expertise.

I have adware in my PC that neither Spybot nor Adaware removes.  Moreover, Yahoo's pop-up blocker is ineffective against it.  I've adjusted Adaware to do deep cleaning, but to no avail.  I don't want to shell out money for a commercial adware/spyware removal program only to find out it doesn't resolve the problem either.  I've scoured Yahoo's roster of recommended sites as well as spyinfoware.com and merijn.com.  They are fine sites and I've learned quite a bit, but I'm still stuck with this darn pop-up problem.  I'm by no means a computer whiz; For example, HijackThis's instructions on rewriting the registry are way over my head. But I try to learn as I go along.

Can you offer any suggestions to help me rid my PC of this awful stuff once and for all?

Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Jim,

Am surprised that deep scanning with Ad-aware doesn't remove it, especially if used with spybot Search & Destroy. What spyware is affecting your computer?

Are you sure it's spyware and not a virus? Go to: http://sarc.com/  Scroll down and click on,"Free Online Virus and Security Check"  Write down exactly anything it finds, then return to: http://sarc.com/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for manually removing.

If you're interested, check out the following site that helps to explain HijackThis:

Hope this helps!
