Computer Security & Viruses/virus protection and firewall

Question
I have a Dell computer that has Windows XP. I have been using Mcafee virus protection, but I understand there is a problem using this with Firefox which I use. What virus protection would you recommend and do I need a firewall? I use this computer for information and the use of two teenagers.

If you don't want to do that, I would suggest using Norton AntiVirus, which is a paid program or AVG or AVAST which are free antivirus programs.

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
