Question
-------------------------
Hey Lorry-

No I didn't uninstall wmp...I didn't think you could? I read somewhere that it was a file that couldn't be uninstalled, only changed to an older version or something like that. If it can be uninstalled, how do I do that?

Oh, and here is the file information:
-audio format: MPEG Layer-3
-video compression: xvid

It's been able to play before, so I have all the codecs or whatever needed to play it...I just don't know what's wrong, and it's frustrating, because the videos that can't play are some of my favorite episodes from a tv show...lol, I know that sounds stupid, but ah well. Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. :)

Hi Lorry, I did the whole defragmentation thing, then rebooted my computer.  I tried playing those files in WMP but I got the same error message.  I didn't install the spybot however. I have microsoft anti-spyware though...is that an equivalent? I am currently scanning my computer right now with it...but like always..it just finds this one virus or whatever called Virtomundo, but it's always able to delete it each time it's found, and my wmp was playing fine even when it first found virtomundo.  so do you think there's still a virus? or do you think there's a worm? Thanks again for your help and quick responses!

Hi Sarah,

Microsoft has a newer version of their AntiSpyware available, it's now called Windows Defender and can be downloaded from:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Spybot and Windows Defender are two different things, download Spybot and don't forget to check for updates before running the scan. Spybot should find and remove virtomundo. Disable System Restore before running the scan.

Did you uninstall WMP, defrag, reboot and then reinstall WMP? If yes, what files are not playing in WMP?

Hope this helps!

Answer
Hi Sarah,

At the following site, scroll down until you see,"Unable to render video: XVID decompressor not found

The solution is to to install the xvid codec and make sure you also have the latest versions of DirectX and Windows Media Player installed.

You can get the xvid codec for windows media player here."

At the site, the word "here" is a link for the required codec:

http://www.updatexp.com/xvid-windows-media-player-codec.html

If that doesn't work, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore and restore the system back to a date when WMP worked correctly. You could also install WMP 10 again, you will be asked if you want to replace the copy that is there already, answer yes.

Hope this helps!

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
