Would I'd be able to wipe out everything off my computer and get ride of this Trojan i got and still be able to get it back to it's original state of when i bought it new? I downloaded a total of 5 discs when I first got it and I was wondering if I could use those to put my computer to new. Or I I should even do that ? Is that even safe to do? I'm a beginner at this and i need step by step instruction if you please. I know it's a lot to ask but you seem to be the best person to ask.And thank you for the last answer you give me.

Hi Paula,

Not knowing which Trojan/Virus is on the computer, I would suggest using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

Click the GO button, then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/  and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

You mentioned that you "downloaded a total of 5 discs when I first got it", what exactly? Is this a brand name computer? Does it have a Restore/Recovery CD? What version of Windows are you using? I'm sorry but I do not remember.

Hope this helps!

I have a gateway. I run windows xp home edition. I'm guessing it'll be my backup cd? I think it has restore/recovery Cd's.

Hi Paula,

Did you run the free virus scan from Symantec, did it find anything? What is the model number of the Gateway Desktop?

Waiting,
Lorry
It's a 507GR model and I did the free scan and it came up with a file name and where it was but when I went to find it to delete it it said no file found. Like I said I'm a beginner and I'm not sure of what I'm doing. Thank you very much for your patients on my dilemma.

Hi Paula,

I need the name of the virus, not it's location to help you. Once you give me that information, I can send you the site on how to remove the virus. Run the free scan again and let me know the name of the virus, okay.

Once we remove the virus, if there is still a problem, you can have an instant chat with Gateway from the following site:

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/4658/4658nv.shtml

Sorry, I'm not sure if they gave you a Restore/Recovery CD when you bought the computer.

HI Lorry,
OK now it says no viruses it clean. But I did print what it was the first time i did the scan
W32.Renama.A@mm
Trojan.Denutaro
Trojan.Zlob.I
PWSleal.Tarno.T
Trojan.Ourxin
And about the restore and recovery Cd's they didn't give me any ,I did them first before going on the internet cause the computer told me too.
Thanks Paula

Answer
Hi Paula,

In the order that the viruses are listed, are the sites that have information on and removal directions:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.renama.a@mm.html

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.denutaro.html

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.zlob.i.html

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/pwsteal.tarno.t.html

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.ourxin.html

Once you get the viruses removed, if you do not have one already, install an AV program, update it once a week and then run a virus scan afterwards.

Hope this helps!

This happens to be of interest to me as it boggles my mind that people have nothing better to do than to write a virus. Wish these people, the ones who write viruses would put the knowledge to good use instead. My job as a local tech involves removing viruses and/or spyware.
