Expert: Lorry - 9/20/2006
QuestionHi,
Of course the only computer we have without protection, finaly got a virus.
Older Dell, running XP
Upon power up, windows goes through its thing, then when the user account screen comes up, I press enter, it starts to login then almost immediately logs off. The windows user account screen is still displayed.
I'm not a virus expert, and I don't play one on TV, but it look something has attched itself to the user account login process.
This is probably an old virus, right? You have the answer right. YOU are so smart, right?

AnswerHi Rboett,
Check out the following from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308041/#3
Using Internet Explorer, go to:
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym
Click the GO button, then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes.
Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to:
http://www.symantec.com/search/ and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.
Hope this helps!
