Concerns about Breast Size/My daughter is 81/2 and has bumps in her breast

Question
My daugher is only 8 1/2 and she has a bump in her breast. Is that normal? I am concerned that she is too young to grow breasts?

Sincerely,

Concerned MOM

Answer
Thanks for your question, Myriam!  I appreciate it!

While it is not common for 8 1/2 year-olds to develop breasts, it is also not unheard of.  Better nutrition is causing puberty to happen earlier and earlier.

However, since you describe it as a "bump," it may be something serious.  I have no way of knowing, but I strongly urge you to make an appointment with your child's doctor to see what it is.  If it's something dangerous, then the earlier they catch it, the better.  If she's simply blooming at a very early age, then I'm sure your doctor can recommend some great literature for you to read about it.

Thanks again,

Alex
