Concerns about Genital Size - penis size

Expert: Janet N - 8/3/2008

Question
Why cant penis enlargement work, if when women bodybuilders take steroids their clitoris always seems to grow enormous? Aren't those two organs almost the same? Someone needs to look into that.

Answer
Hi Eric,

Thanks for your question.

From what I've read, testosterone can, indeed, increase clitoris size in women.  However, it seems to have effect on a man's penis only during puberty.  That is, from what I've read, once you're an adult, that's your penis size is no longer influenced by testosterone.

Some penis growth supplements claim to contain testosterone or other hormones that influence growth.  According to what I've read, these claims are unsubstantiated.

Many penis growth supplements/techniques are advertised using testimonials, that is, people who claim to have gotten benefits from the product.  Testimonials (sometimes false...) are sometimes used when clinical support is not available.  That is, be skeptical of testimonials!

Think of it this way:  in an embryo, a clitoris and penis are the same.  Once the male fetus is exposed to testosterone during its development, the clitoris/penis begins to grow.  When exposed to further testosterone during puberty, the penis grows again until it reaches its "full potential".  Perhaps the clitoris responds to testosterone because they haven't reached their "full potential" yet.  From what I've read, though, the adult male penis does not have the same response.

Janet
