Conifers - Italian Cypress

Follow-Ups to Answer from Expert Jim Hyland

We had 20 to 40 year old Blue Italian Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens "glauca") between our pool deck and fence until a week ago. I cut 28 of them down! Why? Because someone years before we bought the house had topped the trees. Once topped they seemed to have a tendency to peel off sections like a giant green banana peel. I discovered in the removal process that some had been tied up and others had been stake to "solve" the peeling problem. The reason the trees were topped was because they were growing into the power lines that also ran parallel to the fence directly above the trees. So please consider what is above your row of cypress before you plant. It may be years but eventually they will touch what is above them. FYI: Ital. Cypress can grow to 60 ft. Hope this is useful.
