Conifers - green giant feeding

Expert: Jim Hyland - 4/7/2008

Question
We live in SW Pennsylvania, planted 85 green giants around our property line last spring.  They are doing well, should we use miracle gro or some other feeding for them this spring?

Answer
Fertilize them in spring and midsummer with granular fertilizer. You can use Miracle Grow, a 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 fertilizer. I wouldn't fertilize new planted trees for the first year. Then use 1/2 lb of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter for the first three years then increase this to a lb per inch of trunk diameter. Scatter the fertilizer around the tree and water in good. With Miracle grow mix with water and pour around the tree not on the foliage. make sure you do not use any fertilizer with a herbicide in it fro the lawn near the trees. These come under several names such as Weed and feed. The herbicide in these products will kill the trees.
