Conifers - SPEARMINT JUNIPER TREE

Expert: Jim Hyland - 5/22/2008

Question
JIM BOUGHT A SPEARMINT JUNIPER FROM WAL MART ABOUT A YEAR AGO  AND IT IS TURNING A YELLOW GREEN.  IS THIS FROM TOO MUCH WATERING? HOW DO YOU GET THE LEAVES DARK GREEN AGAIN? SO FAR THE BRANCHES ARE FLEXABLE.   LIVE IN SEDONA AZ.  THE SOIL HERE IS NOT THAT GREAT

Answer
Stop the watering. Grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerant of a wide variety of soils. Tolerates some drought once established. Intolerant of wet soils. This tree does not like wet feet and wet soil. They have low water need once established. If the area goes 2-3 of weeks without rain I would water with 1 inch of water (place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop). If it rains do not water.  Do not fertilize this will cause the need for water.
