Conifers - pine tree roots

Expert: Jim Hyland - 7/19/2008

Question
My neighbor has two large pine trees next to my driveway. The roots which go under my driveway are now pushing up and damaging the asphalt. I want to get the driveway redone but I am wondering what damage will be done if I disturb or even remove some of these roots.

thanks

Answer
As long as not more than 20% of a trees roots  are cut then there is little damage. In conifers you can cut more than this. I do not think cutting the roots of pine along the drive in this situation will cause the pine any problem. I would remove the roots as you install the drive.
