Question
We live out of Angleton,Tx.; Texas Gulf Coast. The Junipers we planted in 2005 are looking sickly, also my 8 ft Norfolk Pine. Some of the branches are turning brown, orange. We have a problem with whiteflys, do you think this is what our trees problem is? We spray Malathion, Soap mixture on fruit trees & other plants, but we do not know if we can safely spray this insectacide on junipers & pines. Please help.Thank you.

Answer
Use soaps when plants are not drought-stressed and when temperatures are under 80°F to prevent possible damage to plants.   Talstar One Bifenthrin Concentrate, Permethrin Pro, Tempo SC and Pyrethrin-Rotenone sprays eliminate adult and nymphs only. Malathion does not work well on whiteflies. Apply your insecticide when first stage nymphs or adults have emerged. In heavy whitefly populations of mixed life stages, two  applications per week may be necessary to bring the population under control with a contact insecticide.  Proper application of the insecticide is also a key component to be successful.  It is necessary to deliver the insecticide to the undersides of leaves as weel as the top of the leaves to achieve good control.
