Question
We have an old, very tall Spruce tree that we are considering installing a low wall/planter box under.  Is this okay to do?  What are the possible problems or concerns about doing this?  Thank you!

Answer
As long as you do not add more then 3-4 inches of soil around the tree trunk and keep the soil from within 6 inches of the trunk, you should be ok. Do not disturb the root area with a roto tiller. The trees roots are within the first 18-24 inches of soil so digging into the soil cam damage them. Additional soil weight will push the air pockets out of the soil and smother the roots.
