I live in Tampa and have a couple pine trees in my yard (not sure what type). Grass around the base of the tree does not grow very well. I am wondering if the sap and/or pine needles from the tree either kill the grass or prevent it from growing? If so, can you explain!  Thanks!

The sap will have no effect on the grass. Pine needles if left covering the grass will thin out the grass. The main reason grass does not grow well under trees is lack of sun light from the shade. Some grasses do not do well in the shade others grasses will grow in the shade of trees. Bermuda grass does not do well in shade for example.
