Question
This may sound like an odd question, but here goes: if it is common knowlege that a man wears a hairpiece, would that serve as headcovering in lieu of a hat or yarmulke?

Answer
Dear Zach,

Thanks for writing.

Not a new question but always interesting. If the head is covered - and different groups have different rules about the size of the head covering involved - then even if it is a hairpiece, the individual is not considered "gilui-i rosh," walking with an uncovered head.

A colleague and friend is an Orthodox lawyer and indeed wears a hairpiece and when in court does not wear a yarmulkah/kipah - relying on the hairpiece to serve a "dual purpose."

A shanah tovah umetukah - happy and sweet New Year 5772 in a world hopefully and finally at peace.
