Question
Rabbi Dov,
I am contemplating conversion to Judaism, my wife is not interested in converting but has no objections to our children ages 9, 7, and 5 being converted. My question is what is the procedure for their conversion. Obviously they don't have the intellectual ability to comprehend a conversion course at these ages. the two older children are boys, and the younger is a girl. The boys have been medically circumcised. Your answer will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Dear Ken,

Thanks for writing.

The process for conversion is possible, and the best suggestion is to speak with a local Rabbi. Since you contacted me I can help you find the closest Conservative Rabbi(s) by writing me at bdlerner1@comcast.net.

Generally speaking, there is a great deal of concern about creating a dual-faith marriage and even further confusing young children were the conversions to occur. This may or may not be an issue in a particular situation, and so it would still be best to check it out with a local Rabbi.

Where do you live? How would your wife conduct her religious life, or is she not following any faith currently? What about the grandparents on either side? These are the kinds of particulars that can help you think through your request.

Looking forward to a response.

Best wishes

Rabbi Dov
