Conservatives - Gas prices

Expert: Dennis - 11/20/2007

Question
I hear that we could really lower gas prices if we just started drilling for oil in our own country.

What places are we talking about here? And what is some logic the tree huggers are using to stop us from doing so?

I did my own research on this, but I want more opinions and as much knowledge as I can find!

Thank you.

-Andrew

Answer
One place would be the ANWR wildlife preserve in Alaska. The environmentalists say that the drilling would ruin the preserve.

Second place would be in the gulf of Mexico (where Mexico just discovered a huge reserve of oil), off the California coast, and in the Great Lakes. The enviros said an accident in any of those bodies of water would be a catastrophe, so they fight to prevent it (they also fight against the building of new nuclear reactors and new oil refineries).

Third place would be the North Pole, Russia is said to have found a big supply that they're trying to get, and lastly, the oil shale in some national park in Utah can't remember its name). At $100 a barrel, it is now economically feasible to extract oil from that rock. Again, the huggers don't want to despoil the territory.
