Conservatives - Reagan Legacy

Expert: Paul Edward Zukowski - 5/31/2006

Question
My question has several facets so please be patient with me.  It involves the “Reagan Legacy.”  While many promote Reagan as one of the greatest American presidents, I have found information that castes a shadow around his seeming unassailable aura.  Why, when his crusade against communism is discussed do we not hear of the ENORMOUS price that was paid with the blood of civilians:  in particular the funding of right wing terrorists and despotic dictators in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras?  Everybody uses the “Reagan doctrine” in defense of these tragedies (which I have heard to be: support any and all opponents of Communism).  However, in my opinion the Reagan Doctrine is totally bogus from the get go.  Let me explain, the majority of Marxist and communist up risings and guerrilla groups exist for one reason, because there are inequalities and human rights abuses that are being ignored by the ruling faction.  These issues often involve indigenous peoples who are viewed as subhuman by their European descended counterparts.  They will not be heard or respected in the current political atmosphere so they wish to change it.   Wouldn’t it have made more sense for the US  to address the human rights abuses and inequalities then to pay the goons to wipe out the dissidents?  Because the Reagan Doctrine does not take this into account thousands upon thousands of people died in Central and South America.  In El Salvador, it was proven that these subversive groups only wanted change, and that given a comprise they might lay down there arms.

Questions
1.   Am I missing something in this whole mess surrounding the Reagan Doctrine?
2.    If the US had stayed out of the America’s would:
A.   The whole continent have fallen to an oppressive form of communism?
B.    The unrest led to comprises like in El Salvador?
C.    The unrest led to Marxist/Socialist governments resembling today’s Bolivia, Venezuela and Spain, as opposed to oppressive communism?

Answer
>1.   Am I missing something in this whole mess surrounding the Reagan Doctrine?

Your evaluation of the situation is seriously off.
First the Communists uprising were not
from systemic inequalities, but were activily stoked by agents of the USSR.  These movements were not seeking freedom, but the installation of SOVIET puppet governments. This was expand the influance of the Communism around the world. Most of the peasants involved did not realize what they were getting into.
While the Marxist doctrine may sound appealing, it is a system that is unworkable. It still has the same inequalities of other systems. Party members got preferential treatment. Infact its been a failure everywhere its been tried.  Communism has lead to some the greatest number of mass murders even without it being challenged from the outside. Stalin & Mao, make Hitler look like an amature.
In the case of Central America, there were no good guys. Both sides were brutal murders.
Reagans policys forced the demise of Warsaw Pact and USSR. This was done in conjunction with
Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II.
Furthermoore, issues would have been resolved by simply addressing human rights issues.
President Carter attempted this and it was an abject failure. Had there not been the USSR attempting to expand its reach, your theory may be correct.

>2.   If the US had stayed out of the America’s would:
>A.   The whole continent have fallen to an oppressive form of communism?

It may have. The goal of Soviet Communism was to export the revelution around the world. It is completely possible it would have went the same South East Asia
went.

>B.   The unrest led to comprises like in El Salvador?

Unlikily as there KGB would have activily attempted to
stop that from happening.

>C.   The unrest led to Marxist/Socialist governments resembling today’s Bolivia, Venezuela and Spain, as opposed to oppressive communism?

Venezuela is very similar to Marxist Dictatorships at this point.  All desent is suppressed.
Bolivia is yet to be seen how it will evolve.
Spain is still a democratic government and was elected. There is still opposition and they can be voted out. Socialism is not the same as Marxism.
