Conservatives/Requirements...
Expert: Lane - 12/12/2007
QuestionFor the past few years I have contemplated the attempt at local politics. I have heard people around the neighborhood speak of "regular" people obtaining office easily. I also hear (in terms of Chicago) that Aldermen earn six figure salaries for what is considered a part time job. Is this true? Furthermore I was wondering if you were familiar with the requirements and could perhaps direct me to the first step to achieving this? A website or government department to contact. Thank You. laura~
AnswerHello, although my area of expertise is more based in Conservative opinion rather than very specific cases such as Chicago Aldermen, I am here to help so I did some research on the salaries and how to get a position.
I found a website (
http://www.russstewart.com/2-8-06.htm) of a Chicago attorney and political analyst named Russ Stewart. He wrote the article in February of 2006 which states that the Chicago Aldermen changed their salaries from $85,000 to $98,125 annually. Also, I read an ABC News article (
http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=local&id=4271041) which was written in June of 2006 saying the Chicago Alderman wanted to raise their salaries again to about $118,000 (and they also confirmed that the job is technically part-time), however I do not know if this passed. Based on this I would say it is entirely possible that these people are now receiving 6-figure incomes.
I also know that it is pretty easy for what you call regular people to obtain local government positions, but I did some more research to find out how easy and what the best way is to start. If you have some expertise in business or another field then your chances are better, and you can run for a small local office by just getting your name on the ballot (the way to do this varies by state and city). I also found some websites which may help you:
