The character in my story would probably be more like David Walker you mentioned or someone with no political background. I am wondering what type of employment that I should give my character that would finace his run for govenor. I was thinking of business. But what business? My character is crooked so what is appropriate? I was also thinking based on your reply that he might pull off some stunt that would get the attention of the public and politicians. I am thinking on this and any suggestions you have would be apppreciated.

Answer A business that would portray him as a competent administrator - perhaps in a field that he would encounter as a Governor. Transportation or finance would be good, since most States are in financial trouble, and their infrastruture need repair.
Whatever the stunt is, it would have to be "repeatable." When my guy walked the State, every town he went through did a story about him. Your guy may stay in a different public housing project apartment every night as he campaigns, or work at different jobs in order to get the "Common man's" perspective (a day herding cows, a day in a lumber mill, a day at a grocery store check out).
Whatever it is, it will have to be more than one event. The candidate will need multiple media exposure to get his name well known.
