Conservatives/Am I a liberal?

Question
Hi,

I'm writing because I'm rather unsure of whether or not my politcal views would label me as a "right winger" or "left winger", or how strong I would be on either side.

My philosophy is also that I embrace political and social change, but only when necessary.  Change should never be gratuitous, nor implemented "for change's sake", without careful forethought of the consequences.  I see new technologies like the Internet and while I enjoy them, I worry that they are being MISUSED, not that they're wrong per se.

I have a lot of views that I might consider conservative - I support the death penalty (applied VERY carefully).  I'm for "good old-fashioned American values" like family values, educational achievement, and I believe that America has to "buckle down" and get back to basics.  I can often reminisce about the "good old days before reality tv, corporate sponsored sports arenas and spam email" (even though I'm only 29 years old).  I think we need to examine where we are going and whether all change is necessarily good.

Yet I do support traditionally liberal values such as abortion rights, gay marraige, and I tend to vote Democratic in presidential elections.  In the current political scene, I have an unfavorable view of George Bush, not BECAUSE he's Republican, but because I don't think he's fit to be President.  I might consider myself a "conservatie democrat" if there is such a thing, only because I HAPPEN to agree with Democrats more than Republicans, though there are some Republicans in the House that I have very favorable opinions of.  There seems to be an unfair negative stigma to the word "liberal," but I'm not REALLY sure what it means.  Is it a smear term invented by Republicans, or is the word just misused?

Any insight you could provide would be most helpful.  I realize you yourself are a conservative, I'm looking for as bipartisan a view as possible.

Answer
There are more conservative Democrats
Zell Miller is one.
Evan Bythe (sp) of Indiana is another.
There used to be more but most bolted to the Republican Party
in the 80s and 90s.

Modern Libralism is be for taxing, big spending government
weak National Defence, Secularistic, Internationalist, Soft on crime, anti gun, pro abortion,
etc.

It became a dirty word because most people rejected socialism which is what infact it is. Which stemmed from Johnsons Great Society and was by any measure an abject failure.
