Console Games (Nintendo, Sony etc.) and Arcade Games - console game

Question
Why do you think console games should avoid using the method of highlighting options with a colour? For example when you are selecting between ‘YES’ and ‘NO’.

Answer
Gday Michal,

I was actually thinking about something similar the other night.  (It was a DVD menu with 2 options and for the life of me I could not tell which option I was highlighting because all that happened was the option changed colors.)

Video games where you are given an option the cursor/choice is usually on the positive response like Yes or Continue and you have to move it on a negative like No or don't continue etc.

Now the main problem with the highlighted choice with 2 options only a color change (Without a circle or border around it) it is very hard to tell which is chosen if it just a straight color change without a font sizing change or animation on the choice.  Moving right or left or even up or down to change from one option to the other is very confusing because most modern games are programmed to rap around the choice.  IE if you have a option be it yes or no, one is to the right and one is to the left of the screen if choice program is a rap around then pressing right several times will just constantly switch between the options.  If there is no rap around pressing right will only stay on the right option until left is pressed then it will move to the left.

Again with games usually the option is going to start on the positive, if they are programmed without rap around options this also helps.

Though provoking.  Thanks for the question.
