About Helen Joan Casper
Expertise
Ever since I played "Pong" in the early 80's, I've been a video game aficionado. I can answer hardware & games questions about PSP (PlayStation Portable), all PlayStation (1,2,& 3), GameCube, Nintendo DS, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Gameboy/Gameboy Advance, and antiquated systems (ColecoVision, Atari, Sega, etc). I can answer hardware questions only about Xbox and Xbox 360. I can also answer PC game questions, especially CounterStrike: Source, Vampire: Bloodlines, Half-Life 1&2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, and all Sims & Sims 2 questions. I am ESPECIALLY knowledgeable in Square-Enix (formerly SquareSoft) games such as ALL the Final Fantasy games (I can even tell you really obscure things about these games). If I haven't played the game yet I will research it and help you find the answer, renting the game if necessary. I can even answer questions dealing with the consoles themselves (hardware questions). I cannot answer questions about Action Replay. I cannot answer questions about football, basketball, or wrestling sports games. I also have very limited knowledge about Xbox & Xbox 360 games unless they are cross-platform.

Experience
I am also an expert here in games/roleplaying games, weddings, childbirth, and doulas. My husband is a computer programmer and one of the forefront coders for CounterStrike: Source scripts & mods. He has his own forums for coders/scripters at Mattie.Info. I have been an expert here since 2000 (under the name of Helen Chipman) and also volunteer on numerous other game-related websites and forums.

Subject: SNES Problem

Question
QUESTION: Helen,
I tried viewing your past answers to SNES related problems before asking this and I think I have the neccessary information for you to help me. I have the original SNES with Nintendo RF Switch going straight to my TV's ANT/VHF/ETC. All of my connections and accessories are Nintendo brand and I have one Nintendo standard controller plugged in. I have power, and after an hour trying to figure out the problem on this T.V. (92 Phillips) I took it out to my living room and hooked it up the same way to my newer T.V. where it worked fine. I'm not getting sound or video display on the Phillips T.V.
I presently have digital cable on that T.V. and have CoAxial cable going into that jack in the back and up to the receiver which is working fine. What I can't figure out is, if my cable works fine with coax hooked up to the jack and the Nintendo functions on my other TV hooked up the same manner why the heck won't it display on my Phillips? Your expertise would be fantastic! I can see that you are a "guru" of sorts!

ANSWER: That is really bizarre that it won't work on the Phillips.

I'm assuming you tried all the channels on the Phillips and it wasn't showing up at all. Have you tried hooking up the Phillips to the cable line? Because it seems to me it might be that the connector on the back of the television might have come a bit loose and perhaps that connector on the television itself isn't working.

See if you can get anything to show up on the Phillips after plugging it in and get back to me. =)

Thanks!
Helen =)

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: What I meant in the second paragraph is that (have digital cable on that T.V. etc.) is that I have cable on that T.V.! I know it's crazy...it can't be the connector because I have coax going into it and the cable works just fine! I think the problem is with the setting of the T.V. or something but I tried it every way I think of...

Answer
I apologize for taking a bit long to respond to your question, but I was doing some research to see if this problem has come up before or if it was something specific to Phillips televisions.

This is my theory, and feel free to tell me I'm wrong because you are getting that channel. A lot of cable-ready televisions will program only the channels they can access through the cable box. This means that they may also eliminate channels that would normally be used for inputs. Try hooking up the SNES again. Using your remote, press the channel program button to manually go through all the channels. It may be that your television omitted channel 2 and this is its auxiliary channel that it connects to by default. Or there may be a one-off channel that your cable doesn't carry (like 4 or 6) that your television automatically bypasses and turns off because when it was programmed, the cable didn't carry that channel.

Try that, if you haven't already or if it seems like a solution. If not, get back to me and I'll keep brainstorming! =)

Thanks!
Helen
