This question is pretty vague. However, I can say that it's good to have a balance of types. Having a fire-type, grass-type, and water-type in the team is good. Your starter should be one of them, and good ones include Gyarados for water, Magmar for fire, and Victreebell for grass. You should also have pokemon that are good against many types, like Primeape (if taught Earthquake and Rock Slide), Graveler, and Snorlax.
However, I'd like some more details to better answer your question. How far are you in the game? What are you trying to do? How much time do you want to spend getting items and training pokemon?
