AboutBrian Jay Expertise I'm moving into answering questions relating to the Xbox 360 and related games. I can still answer questions on previous topics (Gamecube/GBA stuff) but please note I will not be able to help at a full capacity.
As always, if I dont know the answer I'll do my best to search for it or point you to the best possible alternative for getting an answer (Updated 31/08/06 and about time too).
Experience I've been a gamer for pretty much the last 14/15 years, so I feel I know my fair share about the subject. I spent the early years with Nintendo, the mid years with both Sony and Nintendo and I'm now just enjoying my Xbox 360, so I have experience with all three groups. I'm not much of a technical buff, but just like before if I cant answer a technical question personally I'll do my best to search for it or point you out to the next best source (Updated 31/08/06)
I bought an official Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter today, and after following the instructions cannot get the console to recognize it. I have searched for hours trying to find the problem/solution but I'm having no luck. When I plug the adapter into the Xbox, a steady red light shows on the adapter, which means that it is ready to be set up. However, when I run a test for Xbox Live, it shows that the network adapter is disconnected. Also the wireless area of the settings page is grayed out. I connected the adapter to a friend's 360, which has a working adapter, and it wasn't recognized there. I even took it back to the store and exchanged it for another one, resulting in the same problem. Do you know what I should do? Thanks
ANSWER: Hi Dallas.
Just a couple things before I can try and find a way to fix this. They may sound simple, but be sure just to check just in case.
1. No Ethernet cord plugged into the machine?
2. Have you tried to see if any thing else works in the usb port you tried? Or have you tried using another usb port?
3. When you tried it on your friends machine, did you use ~your~ internet to do so? Basically I gotta know if your wireless is working on both ends...
I'll get back to you asap once I know bout these things first.
Thanks
Brian

QUESTION: Hey, thanks for the quick reply. Here's the info you wanted.
1. There is no ethernet cord plugged in. I checked the port and made sure there was nothing stuck in there.
2. I haven't tried putting anything else in that usb port yet, but I did try putting the adapter in the other 2 controller ports and no luck.
3. Yes, my friend brought his machine to my house and used my internet. He had no trouble using his adapter with my internet, but when I replaced it with mine, it wasn't recognized.
Actually, I never tried putting his adapter onto my Xbox...I'll have to try that as soon as I can; it might be my machine. If you need to know anything else, please let me know.
ANSWER: Hey
I would look at trying something in each of the ports also. This could simply be a case of only just having the adapter only half in. Do try to see if your friends adapter works too, cause it could be your machine not recognising the adapter.
To be quite honest, I havent been able to find a simple fix for this. Be sure to try the idea you suggested, plus try something else that you may be able to fit the usb cord into (try an ipod nano charger if you dont have anything 360 wise). If nothing comes up, and by that I mean you cant get the machine to read the wireless adapter I might suggest a call to Microsoft Support. This thing could possibly be internal, and I wont give out advice on DIY for stuff internally as I have no real knowledge on the subject.
Hope things turn out better for you,
Brian

QUESTION: I tested my friend's adapter in my 360, and it works fine. I connected to Xbox Live with no problem. Then I unplugged it and stuck mine in, and it wasn't recognized. All of my USB ports work as well. Very frustrating. It seems just to be a problem with the adapter itself, since neither of our 360s will recognize it and the other one works fine. I'll probably just return it to Walmart and buy another one somewhere else. Thanks for your suggestions and help. I appreciate it!
Answer Yeah, this is quite strange. Clearly, it isnt your internet thats the problem, neither the machine. Could simply be that walmart struck out twice. If you do get a third one from somewhere else and that doesnt work, give Microsoft support a call. Considering your story, it might be in their interest to help :)
