Console Games (Nintendo, Sony etc.) and Arcade Games/Quandary About Game System
Expert: Joseph - 6/8/2009
QuestionHello. I am a bit perplexed at the moment regarding which game system to purchase, and I was wondering if you had any advice. Finances are quite restricted, so unfortunately, this is definitely limiting. The trouble is, I can only really afford a portable system. However, ultimately, I prefer the experience of the “regular” systems (I don’t know specific terminology for distinguishing the ones that are not portable). Especially for someone who did not get into video games that intensely, to start out, it seems it would be more beneficial to play games in which I am better engaged in what I am playing (with the sound and the visual breadth of the experience, especially). When the GameBoy Pocket came out, I never did play it as often as I would have liked because it was too difficult to concentrate on what I was doing, especially with the screen size and graphic limitations (granted, I do realize graphics have improved enormously since then). I can see how a portable system could be fun and useful when out and about (on trips, waiting in a doctor’s office, etc.) but for more engaged playing, especially for the types of games I would like to play, and how I tend to interpret audio/visual stimuli personally, I think one of the other systems would be best for me. I am wondering about several options. - If I should get a used Playstation 2 (I really like many of the games it offers), even though it is now becoming obsolete. - If I should get a used XBox 360, - Or if I should simply just stick it out with a portable system.
I prefer games that are interesting, thought-provoking, and sometimes even unique. I don’t care for incredibly graphic gore and violence. From what I have played, I enjoy a variety of different genres, but some of the ones I really enjoy are fighting games (like TEKKEN and Street Fighter), racing games, and role-playing games.
What do you suggest I do?
AnswerYou're question has many parts to it, and it is very involved, but I will do my best to offer my opinion.
First I'll discuss the portable vs console issue. I think you'd be happy with either option. Even a used PS2 can offer you a huge library of games, most of which you can pick up on the cheap due to the age of the system. There is a novelty with having a portable system, however. You mentioned you like playing unique and interesting games, which would lead me to recommend you getting a Nintendo DS. The two screens, microphone, and touch screen abilities allow developers to do things they can't do on regular consoles. The system is designed to be easily accessible to everyone, while still being extremely entertaining. The new Nintendo DSi systems even have cameras and internet capability, which just add a new level of depth to the gaming system.
On the other hand, a console is more powerful than a handheld, and can offer better graphics and (sometimes) a deeper gaming experience. I could write pages on the advantages and disadvantages of both options. Here's what I recommend. Go to a video game specialty store, such as GameStop or EB Games, and talk with the store clerk. They're very well informed and can spend time with you on your choice, picking out games, letting you know of your options, etc. They will be able to give you more advice than I'd be able to type here for you. I do recommend to give the Nintendo DS a serious look over your other options, because it can deliver what you are asking for, the price point on the system and the games are very reasonable, and it offers the kind of gaming experience that is very unique and entertaining. I hope I've been able to help somewhat, but I think spending time with someone who's trained to help people make these kinds of choices would be very good for you. Whatever you pick though, I'm sure you'll be happy with it.
Happy Gaming!
