Question
QUESTION: gday
im in australia lookin on ebay to buy very old ps1 games and some newer games of the same series but newer consoles but its easier to find these overseas and before i make any purchases, i was wondering if australian consoles such as sony consoles in particular work with any other countries consoles or games in particular european ones???

thanks for your time mate... cheers

ANSWER: Gday Jarrod,

Being an Ex-Australian living in the USA I can tell you if you buy any game from UK or Europe it should have not a problem playing on any system you have.  So you are correct in your theory they are a PAL format the same as Australia and New Zealand.

Anything from the USA or Japan will be NTSC and NTSC-J and will not play on a unmodded console.

The Plus is if you have a modded console your TV usually will be capable of displaying both a PAL and NTSC signal.  (A luxury that for some strange reason you don't get in the USA)

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: thanks mate
and sorry but question is there a difference between NTSC and NTSC-J??? and would u hav any idea on how i could come across a chip for the modification to any console that needs it??? because i have never needed to get the mod and the idea of buying a new console for the sole purpose of playing imported games isn't a very attractive idea to me???

thanks again mate i appreciate your help

Answer
Gday Again Jarrod,

Difference between NTSC and NTSC-J is basically they are both NTSC signals but one is Japanese encoded.  Basically both output the NTSC signal but one is encoded for a Japanese territory.

In Sony Playstation history you could not just wack a Japanese Game in a US system even though both systems are NTSC, both for the PS2 and PS1.  (Like say a SNES or N64)  You needed a mod or boot disk to get around the region coding.

Now the PS3 is alittle more region free the only thing is it really goes of is your TV signal so if you have a HD TV you should be fine.  If you have a normal tube TV your fairly stuck playing only PAL games.  All PS3 Games should output in 720p which is a standard world wide if you have a HD TV you simply set it and you PS3 up to output in 720p and it will play any PS game from anywhere.  (480i is really a NTSC standard and 576i is your PAL Standard when it comes to HD TV.)

So for your older games you will need a boot disk or mod chip for both a PS1 or PS2.  (Boot disks usually require you to swap the disk out but require no soldering skills but you might have to modify you gaming unit)  While a mod chip usually requires you to do some soldering.

As to where to look try googling mod chip and Australia.

I came up with www.ozmodchips.com

You might be able to get them thru a local Online Auction Site like Oztion (Because ebay bans these type of Auctions) or even ask someone at your local gaming store they might know some one.

Hope this helps you further.
