im in australia lookin on ebay to buy very old ps1 games and some newer games of the same series but newer consoles but its easier to find these overseas and before i make any purchases, i was wondering if australian consoles such as sony consoles in particular work with any other countries consoles or games in particular european ones???

Being an Ex-Australian living in the USA I can tell you if you buy any game from UK or Europe it should have not a problem playing on any system you have. So you are correct in your theory they are a PAL format the same as Australia and New Zealand.

Anything from the USA or Japan will be NTSC and NTSC-J and will not play on a unmodded console.

The Plus is if you have a modded console your TV usually will be capable of displaying both a PAL and NTSC signal. (A luxury that for some strange reason you don't get in the USA)
