which is better, the ps3 or the xbox360? and why?

For the record I own neither.  (I am cheap and more interested in Classics Systems and Arcade/pinball pieces of equipment)

Well price wise they are both about the same.

Realistically if we are talking about just the system the PS3 is the better system because it is more powerful in quite a number of ways. (I will not requote the specs but provide a good link)

The PS3 is also a bit more reliable hardware wise than the 360 and has the added feature of being a Bluray player.

But that being said the 360 wins hands down when it comes to game library, it has more and a better range of games than the PS3.  Apparently it is also easier to develop games for over the PS3.

Backward comparability they both equally suck.  (MS & Sony dropping the ball on that one)

Online capability the Xbox wins (I guess having to pay for the service means MS does put more $$ into developing it than the free PSN)

Company lineage Sony Playstation has supported there systems well while MS once a new system is released dumps support for the older one.

Over all I probably would choose a 360 over a PS3.  Simply because of the games available, type of games available and online play.  Sure it is alittle less reliable and the lure of Bluray really is not there for me as I am not updating all my movies again, plus I don't own a huge TV.  (After a while I am sure I will probably own both anyway.  Of the current Gen of systems we own a Wii simply because I have a young family and gaming is all about fun not super processing power and graphics.  If it was just me I would be all over an Xbox 360.)

Overall it is really up to the individual and it boils down to Price, Games played, Multimedia and company history.  Which differs for everyone.
