Console Games (Nintendo, Sony etc.) and Arcade Games/SNES graphics scrambled

Question
Hi! I recently dug out my SNES and found that now all of my games display completely scrambled graphics when I turn on the system. Apart from the graphics, the games seem to work fine, with color, sound, and controller response.

I used the Q-tip and rubbing alcohol cleaning techniques on the contacts for the cartridges. I've also tried a technique I read on this board of inserting the cartridge into the slot repeatedly and then cleaning the cartridge in order to get the dirt from the pin connector out.  These have had no effect, after repeated attempts. I also bought the security bit and have opened the console, but there is no obvious problem and not a lot of dust inside. The problem occurs regardless of whether I use the RF switch or the multi-out.

Do you have any suggestions?  Is this a problem with the graphics processor in the console, or is it a problem with the pin connector?

Dan

Answer
Gday Dan,

I fear it is probably one of the PPU chips (Picture Processing Unit) in the console that have gone bad which can't be fixed unless you have wickedly good soldering skills and another chip to replace it.

I would expect the game totally not to work if there is a problem with your Cartridge slot, but you say the game works fine just corrupt graphics.  Although having said that NES systems will also play properly even with scrambled graphics if the cartridges are unaligned.

About the only suggestion I can think of since you have the security screw bits disassemble your SNES again.  Remove the cartridge eject button/mechanism.  Remove the 2 silver screws that hold in the cartridge slot.  Wiggle then remove the cartridge slot.  (The cartridge slot is actually made up of 2 pieces one soldered onto the board and the piece that covers it.)  Once you have the piece removed you can clean it properly and check for anything bent, rusted or corroded and possibly fix if need be.  It might be just one pin bent or has alittle corrosion on it.

If not you going to have to treat yourself to a second hand or clone SNES unit.
