Console Games (Nintendo, Sony etc.) and Arcade Games/DSi WPA and Wi-fi Downloads

Question
QUESTION: Hi...

I'm usually the one getting questions, but I can't seem to find any site that can answer this question for me.

My Internet uses WPA security, which isn't compatible with any of my Pokemon games.

I don't have a WEP key, and it won't accept the password my provider gave me, which is actually the WPA key, cause they didn't listen to what my mum said.

The Nintendo site says that if you can't get the WEP key to work, switch off the security, and connect the DS then.

Every time I try this, I lose the wireless connection altogether. It takes about ten minutes to get it to pick up again, and that's only when I put the security back on.

Just in case it matters, I have a LINKSYS Wireless-G broadband router, model WRT54GA, version 1.0.02, from Cisco. The Nintendo site says that it is compatible.

So, when I heard that the DSi works with WPA, I decided to buy one. Although I haven't yet... I've been doing some research to make sure that I'll be able to connect.

My question is: Will the DSi be able to connect to the Wi-fi for downloads with WPA security?

I don't play competitively, I just want to receive downloads and trade over the GTS with my Pokemon games. That's all.

Every other site assumes that you want to smash the guy five thousand miles away with your uber team or something, and I just want to trade!

Please help, as I have to decide whether or not to get the DSi before the 25th, when a wi-fi only download ends.

Thank you.

ANSWER: Gday Lone Wolf,

The DSI does indeed use both WEP and WPA.  The instructions aren't very clear in the manual or on Nintendos website.

Here is what you have to do.

Go into the DSi System Settings, Internet, Connection Settings, Advanced Setup.

From there is should show connections 1-6.  1-3 is WEP while 4-6 is WPA.  So just click on 4, search for your access point (Whatever you point is called), once you found it select it and then type in you WPA key.

At this point you should be then connected to the Internet.

Hope this should help you

QUESTION: Yes, I know all that, I did find that on a site somewhere, but I'm afraid it still really doesn't answer my question...

After I do all that, can I receive downloads from Wi-fi or trade Pokemon over the GTS?

I'm hoping to find out BEFORE I pay almost $300 for a console I can't return or exchange...

Answer
Gday again,

If you can connect your DSi to the Internet then you can trade Pokemon according to the tutorial at http://www.pokemon-gts.net  (step one goes on about connecting to the Internet and re-directs you to the nintendo site as to how.)

Since we have established that you can connect said DSi via the connection available to you with a WPA key, then you should be able to trade pokemon world wide via the connection.  (Or even find a free hot spot and connect there)

Hope this helps
