Question
According to the Microsoft website, you can 'Use up to four Wireless Controllers and Wireless Headsets simultaneously on one Xbox 360 for the most intense multiplayer gaming sessions ever.' Does this mean that a total of 4 wireless devices can be connected (2 headsets and 2 controllers, for example), or that 4 controllers AND 4 headsets (8 devices in total) can be used together?

Microsoft is quite correct in its statement, you can indeed use four wireless headsets and controllers at the same time. When you use a wireless controller, if you got a wireless headset as well, it shares the same slot as the controller.

Hope that helps in making the decision to get one... I can tell from experience that you get quite good quality with the mic. It picks up voices quite well, and a lot more durable than the wireless ones MS make as well.
