Console Games (Nintendo, Sony etc.) and Arcade Games/super nintendo system question.

Question
Hi, I just dug out my old SNES. I was excited to get it out again, but realized I didn't have an AC adapter anymore. I went on to eBay and bought one for fairly cheap, and it says it works for SNES/NES/Sega, and has two different cords (one that I suppose shares NES/SNES, the other to Sega). I plugged it in, hooked up my RF, put a game in and my power won't turn on. I've checked all my connections, I've tried different outlets. Do you think my problem is the AC adapter or my SNES? If it is the SNES, is it fixable or do I get a new one?

Answer
Just to check, does the adapter look like this?

It should be a 10V adapter.
If I'm not mistaken, the Sega ran on a 9V adapter. It could just be that your SNES isn't getting enough power, especially if the adapter you bought is only a 9V one. It may be that the person selling it simply didn't know that the SNES took a higher voltage than the Sega (and NES). The adapters look the same but if it's not a 10V, your SNES isn't going to get enough power to it.

I highly recommend getting a SNES-specific adapter from either the link above or from a local gaming store. eBay has some good deals, but you take a chance when buying console parts- some sellers simply have no idea what they're selling and mislabel things, leaving you with a part that you never needed.

If it is indeed a 10V adapter, this question is a bit more difficult to answer because you don't have another console where you could try the AC adapter. If you did, you could try to AC adapter in the other console- if it worked, then it has to do with the internals of the SNES. If not, the AC adapter is faulty.

If the adapter is correct, I recommend taking the AC adapter  & SNES to your local resell console store and have them test both there. While they are not required to do this, a lot of stores will do it as a courtesy to customers.

Please let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)

Ever since I played "Pong" in the early 80's, I've been a video game aficionado. I can answer hardware & games questions about PSP (PlayStation Portable), all PlayStation (1,2,& 3), Wii, Wii Fit, GameCube, Nintendo DS, Nintendo (NES), Super Nintendo, Gameboy/Gameboy Advance, and antiquated systems (ColecoVision, Atari, Sega, etc). I can answer hardware questions about all systems (including PS1 - PS3, Wii, NES, SNES, PSP, DS, GBA, GB, Xbox and Xbox 360). I can also answer PC game questions, especially CounterStrike: Source, Vampire: Bloodlines, Half-Life 1&2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, and all Sims & Sims 2 questions. I am ESPECIALLY knowledgeable in Square-Enix (formerly SquareSoft) games such as ALL the Final Fantasy games (I can even tell you really obscure things about these games). If I haven't played the game yet I will research it and help you find the answer, renting the game if necessary. I can even answer questions dealing with the consoles themselves (hardware questions). I cannot answer questions about Action Replay. I cannot answer questions about football, basketball, or wrestling sports games. I also have very limited knowledge about Xbox & Xbox 360 games unless they are cross-platform. If it is an independent game that has not been widely published and/or a game only released in some countries, I may not be able to help with it either (sadly!)
