Construction & Contractors/spackling

Question
hi, Joe

I think you can help me.
I am trying to fix cracks in my wall that are due to settling and outside traffic.
I use spackling compound, and follow the "rules" given in various books.
The problem is that when the spackle has dried, one can see where the spackling was applied.
That is not what I want.
What am I doing wrong? Am I using too much pressure when using the putty blade, or am I not using enough pressure?
Or is there something else wrong with my technique?

I value your opinion and look forward to your reply.

Chris

Answer
Good question.
The best method of filling in cracks is to put down the first coat with the goal of filling in the deepest part of the crack. When that coat dries, sand lightly then put on another coat. When the second coat dries, sad lightly and see if the crack is filled. If not, add a third coat, very thin and let dry. You should be done.
