Construction & Contractors/2nd floor Addition over older addition over crawl space

Question
I live in NJ. we have a small cape cod with basement and an addition that is
8'x12' which is over a crawl space (approximately 2 feet).
Now we are interested in adding a shed dormer to the original house and are
wondering about whether it is a possible (good idea) to build out over the
addition while we're at it which would obviously add additional space, but also
be more appealing.
What should be the first steps in getting the addition underway?

Answer
I would think that while you were adding a second floor, building over the addition would be a wise idea that incrementally would be economical.
The first step is to engage an architect to draw the plan. The architect will need to inspect the existing foundation and framing to insure the structure will support the latest addition and draw a plan for submission to the local jurisdiction for a permit.
Hope this helps.
