About Brian McElroy
Expertise
I am a home builder in the Tampa Florida area specializing in energy-efficient homes built with precast concrete wall systems that are hurricane resistant to 235 mph. I have researched and used many methods of new home construction and find this the most cost-effective, environmentally-friendly method of home building for this area. I am also investigating other alternative methods to improve my products. I am a member of the Florida Green Build Coalition, EPA Energy Star Program, and have other affiliations involving energy savings, safe building practices and quality construction practices.

Construction & Contractors - pre-cast walls

Question
Hello,

I am using a pre-cast, pre-insulated wall system for a house i am building in chicago. what i would like to know is what to use for the outside of the house. What is the least expensive covering on the market. I need at least a 1 hour UL rating. I was going to use vinyl siding, but i need such an expensive sheathing to get the UL rating, i have begun to think that there might be a more cost effective product. Are you familiar with 1/4 brick on some type of cement board?  Anything pre-fab? All suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks!

Answer
Precasts are great. That is all I build. Who is your manufacturer? I would love info. I have people ask all the time and my supplier only builds in Florida. I would recommend either insulated vinyl or Hardee board. I am not sure of fire ratings in your area, but it is popular here. The only drawback is it has to be painted and maintained. Vinyl siding is virtually maintenance free other than occasional washing. Best of luck with the project. If you need more info, all you have to do is ask a local building official or inspector. They love to give advice I have found. www.mcelroycustomhomes.com...Brian
