Question
i would like to put in a jacuzzi bathtub that requires an 80 lb/sq ft floor load capacity.  My floor joists are 2 x 10 x 13'8"  @16"oc. one end sets on the wall plate and the other has joist hangers from a very big beam. floor is 1/2 or 3/4 ply with 5/8 particle board on top.  if this isn't adequate could i build a 2x6 frame underneath the tub(and on top of the floor) to get what i need?  the joists are 1 and 2 fir.  thanks

Answer
Hi Bart

The conditions you describe are adequate but marginal.  It would be a good idea to install additional floor joists between the existing joists.  Since this is a bathtub, I am assuming it is in a bathroom.

If the bathroom is on the 1st floor and you have a basement, the job may be easier.  If it's on
the 2nd floor, over living space, it would be a major undertaking.

I don't think the additional platform would be of any benefit - except to add weight to the floor system which you don't need.

Good luck with your project
