Construction Industry/Mill Review Visit

Question
Hello,

I am a Structural Engineer working on a high rise building project. Large diameter CFT column (concrete filled circular steel composite column) has been specified for the building column. The diameter of the CFT column is 1800mm.

The base material of the SAW pipe steel plate is complying with ASTM 572 and the pipe is formed by cold rolling process complying with BS EN 10219.

We are concerned about the quality of SAW pipe from mill. If we are given a chance to visit the mill then please let me know the important technical and production issues to be raised during SAW Steel Pope Mill review visit.

Answer
Hello Waseem,

My apologies - your question is out of my realm of experience.
I can only assume that if the specifications of the steel material
meets the engineers determination, then the steel is suitable for
use.

If I were to visit the mill, I would specifically want to see the
testing procedure and methods.  Are all the testing devices calibrated
frequently?  What is the procedure for correcting products that don't
meet testing requirements?  How long have the products been in use?
I'm sure you could think of many more questions that would give you
the comfort level you may need.

On another note:  My daughter stayed in Bahrain for nearly a year where
she worked at the American Embassy.  She has very fond memories of her
experiences there.

I hope this has been helpful.
