Construction Industry/storage loft in garage

QUESTION: I'd like to build a storage loft in garage.  Lots of wasted space above.  The size would be 10' x 16'.  It would connect to two existing walls.  The material I'd use is 2"x6". Covered with plywood.  I'd like to be able to use one support adjustable beam on the outside corner.  I believe that if I use two 2"x6" on the outside rail and connect them together, it will add extra support.  Will this project work?

I apologize for the delay in responding.  What with the holidays and visiting family, I was very busy.

Now to your project.

I'm not sure I understand the size and system you are suggesting.  If you have a single car garage, it is probably 12' to 16' wide and 20' to 24' deep.  If it was built with conventional wood framing, you have roof joists creating the pitch and ceiling joists that tie the left and right walls together.  The ceiling joists do not have to match every roof joist.  You could have collar ties 2/3's up the roof pitch.  These prevent the roof from deflecting and structurally prevent the roof weight from pushing out the exterior walls.  

Can you send me a more detailed description of your existing conditions and describe what you are trying to achieve.  I understand "loft" but how do you plan on accessing the loft and what do you intend using the loft for - storage, work space, sleeping, etc.

QUESTION: The size of the garage doesn't matter. I mentioned lots of wasted space. I'm asking if the loft that I described above, built with 2x6 would be stable enough for light storage.  It's going to be attached to two existing walls.  2x6's connected is just a too add strength to the outside load bearing area.

Hello John,

A 2"x 6" member is limited in the amount of live load that it can support.  If you have the space, I would suggest you use a larger structural piece.  If the span of joists is 10 ft then a 2"x 8" would be recommended.  If the span is 16 ft, then a 2"x 12" would be recommended.
