Construction Industry/Value of poor design in construction projects

What are reasons and effects of poor value in the design of some construction projects?

Dated 18th Sept 2013,

Dear Mr. Livison,

This is to acknowledge receipt of your trailing question.

It would be helpful if you could let us know the ‘back-ground’ for the question to advise you on the best way forward. Also, it would be helpful to know whether the question is from the Client / Owner’s Side, Engineers’ / Architects’ Side or from the Contractors’ Side.

In general, the answer to the question could be as follows:

Reason:    Lack of Experience of Engineers’ / Architects’.

Effect:    It shows up in the drawings, detailing, specifications, Bill of Quantities, etc. leading to disputes, stoppages at work, losses in terms of money / time / reputation, etc.

Reason:    Lack of necessary time / thought / attention given to the ‘Design / Tendering Process’.

Effect:    It shows up in the errors which are unchecked or in the incompleteness of the drawings, detailing, specifications, Bill of Quantities, etc. The overall QUALITY of the project suffers.

Reason:    Lack of appropriate Compensation for ‘Good / Value’ Design.

Effect:    In his / her eagerness to acquire the project, Engineers’ / Architects’ under-quotes and then proceeds to CUT – PASTE details / designs to save upon time – costs; in the process, once again, the overall quality of the project suffers.

Please feel free to revert, with your thoughts on the above,

Yours Sincerely,
