Question
I am biulding wood boxes.The butt hinges I am using for the lids do not lay flat against the back. The center of the hinge pin protrudes just a little past the plane of the plates. Do I need to mortise the lid a little,or the back of the box,or both? Or just install them as they are ?Thank you.Noel
Dear Noel,
Butt type hinges are generally mortised into the wood so the hinge plate is flush with the wood. The alternative is a strap hinge that when installed on the exterior, allows the lid or door to open 360 degrees. When installed on the interior, the lid cannot be extended past 90 degrees. | Comment | I'm not completely sure that I made my question clear.I know that butt hinges can be put on the outside surface of boxes. I know some manufacturers make their hinges more flat on one side when open 180 degrees.I guess I really wanted to know if the hinge was still considered installed correctly if the hinge pin made the plates shy away from the surface of the box a little bit.That being said,the expert gave me good info plus the optional method | ||

I am the "technical editor" for a publisher of books that relate to home maintenance.
