I believe the question was regarding the Standard methods of measurement (for construction) like the SMM or the CESMM.

In construction, there are various ways one can measure an item, like outside to outside, inside to inside, center line to center line. There are numerous questions, like - Does one measure net or include the additional values for working spaces? What items and ancillaries are measured separately, and which are measured as part of one item? These cause ambiguities in measurements and all the above are addressed in the Standard Methods of Measurement.
