Container Gardens/Container garden: beet leaves with rice like eggs

Question
hi there. My beet plant seems to have tiny white rice like eggs growing on the
underside of the plant leaves. Any idea what these are and iff i can eat the
leaves still? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Lauren, these are catepilla eggs, the beet is still fine to eat, but you will need to erradicate these eggs first, if there arn't too many then just scrape them off and wash the leaf well before eating. The eggs are just attached to the leaf, there is no internal action taking place inside the leaf. If there are too many for manual removal, then you will need to cut the leaves off and discard. Nick
