Container Gardens/potting soil vs. garden soil

Question
Do I really need to use potting soil for my potted caladiums and guara over garden soil? I just finished using garden soil for my seasonal ground cover and I bought too much. I used the Miracle Gro garden soil for flowers and vegetables with plant food.  Are they really different or are manufacturers just getting us to buy more products? Thank you for the education!

Answer
Hi Barbara, that is a very good question! the truth is, potting soil is more refined then top soil, or garden soil; its usually lighter to prevent it from hardening in the pot, other then that they are pretty similar; you can use your gardening soil, but just mix in a little perlite to loosen it up, a small bag is plenty and cheap enough.
