Container Gardens - brown turkey fig

Expert: nick mccann - 6/21/2009

Question
I just received a brown turkey fig for  Fathers day. The plant
is about three feet high in a five gallon container and has
small fruit. Is it best to leave the plant in the container or
plant it. If it is best to plant, how do I go about it?
I live in Cary NC

Answer
I would leave it in its container (and eventual larger one..) that way you can move it out of harms way, be it cold temperatures, storms etc. In a couple of months you can apply a well balanced granular fertilizer for fruit trees and every month hit it with a shot of Miracle-Grow soluble. Figs are pretty easy to grow, and outside of the occasional bout with fungal problems will give you plenty of enjoyment and Figs! Nick
