Question Hi.
I am college graduated from overseas and because of the requirements to get licensed here I decided to try to turn a long time "hobby" into a profession.
I always loved English and loved to understand the meaning of the words and translate into my native language. With that I started translating articles, books back and fourth.
Now I want to pursue a degree, a profession in this field: translation. I have no idea which way I should go. Which college, courses or classes are required and recognized to become a professional that one day can land a job and translate a book for a major book printing label.
Could you guide me with that ?
I'd appreciate it.
Thank you
Answer Hello Sonia,
Thanks for asking a question. Translation is an interesting field. Having a degree may make finding a job easier, but most translation jobs require experience. American University in Washington, DC has a Foreign Language Interpretation & Translation bachelor's degree. NYU has a major in linquistics, here is the website: http://www.nyu.edu/gsas/dept/lingu/undergraduate/faq.html
You mention that you have started translating articles and books. Have you approached any publishers about taking on a translating position? I also suggest checking out freelancing websites where small jobs are posted. You can earn freelance pay, generally by the hour or by the job. Experience is key in this field and moving from "hobby" to "career" is possible, as long as you develop your credentials.
