Question
I am in a data management class and have been asked to explain what communities of practice means. I work for a law firm and I guess I am not understanding what a community of practice really is or how it would apply to my office. I was thinking that a practice group would be a community of practice. I dont think that it has to be related to the firm where I work and was just wondering if you could give any examples relating to this term. I would very much appreciate it. Thanks

Answer
Sherrie,

Communities of Practice (CoPs) = an informal organizational learning technique. An excellent source to see this in action is in the article by John Seely Brown and Paul Duguid, "Organizational Learning and Communities-Of-Practice: Toward a Unified view of working, learning and innovation."  as published by Organizational Science, Vol. 2, No. 1, February 1991.

CoPs are based in informal organizational learning, organized around a practice, and provides opportunities to groups of people within an organization to share what they know, learn from one another, and collaborate experiences with others who have similar interests or goals.

The function of CoPs is to develop the individuals within to enhance their expertise and define their roles.   The CoP is brought together informally and not for the purpose of a project, individuals within belong because they want to build their knowledge and share what they know with others, and increase innovation. The CoP is for an unknown duration and lasts as long as there is interest.

I hope this helps you.  If you have additional questions, please let me know.
