Question
Hi Cynthia.  I am a Doctoral Student at Argosy Univ./Sarasota FL campus.  I am feeling soooo overwhelmed right now!  I can't seem to get motivated to write because I am being absolutely pounded with financial challenges...to incolude how I'm going to pay for this!  I'm a 52 y.o. Black woman and FastWeb has not been a help in finding funds.  I can't stop now.  What do I do???

Answer
Hello to a fellow doctoral student!

I attend Northcentral University where I am working on my PhD in Business Administration. I definitely understand the financial challenges! I am employed full time and pay for one class at a time. There are loan programs available - have you considered them? Here is a link financial aid and scholarships: http://www.argosy.edu/admissions/scholarships-financial-aid/Default.aspx

If you have not done so, fill out the FAFSA. It's easy to do online here: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

FastWeb is a waste of time - especially for doctoral scholarships. They get your email address and send lots of spam. I suggest that you do the above, and also check out local organizations which may offer small scholarships. Some employers also have tuition reimbursement programs.

There are a number of organizations which offer minority scholarships, such as the United Negro College Fund. Also look at KPMG's (http://www.kpmgfoundation.org/foundinit.asp)"The PhD Project" (http://accounting.rutgers.edu/kpmg/funding.html).

When you think about stopping, think about what made you decide to go back to school for your PhD in the first place. Was it a better career? Self-satisfaction? Love of school? Then ask yourself what has changed? Will you regret discontinuing your education? Of course you will! Let me encourage you to find a fellow student and partner-up to get through classes. Just having someone to encourage you makes a big difference!

Stay the course!
