Question
Hi Cynthia,
I am a married mother of three children. I have a second year college student, a senior, and a sophmore. I am currently workin as an affiliate instructor at a local university. I will be applying for a doctoral program for fall 2009.  As it stands I will need some financial assistance in order to pay for my doctorate. Can you guide or direct me to some viable scholarships or fellowships?

Thank You

Answer
Hi Cynthia,
Off the top of my head I am not aware of any money available right now. However that doesn't mean anything. I have been retired for a little over a year now and I'm not tucked in on the latest money issues. Were I you, I would go to the dean of academic affairs and pick at his/her brain. Depending on your discipline he/she will know what is available today. Don't accept a "I don't know answer from this person, they do know, and your job is to get the information out of them. I would go to the college you obtained your BS from. They treat their own students much better than outside students. At the very least it is worth an e-mail. The other thing I would do is to investigate the "Uncle Sam's" grant website. It is not free but for the 14-15 bucks it gives a pretty good look at what is available.
I wish I could help you more.
Mike
PS; Try your local college "Student Advisors" They seem to know where the money is.
